Hello everybody!
My name is Daria.
I want to say a couple of words about Russian winter which came to Moscow city. We have cold weather almost 8 months a year and it’s difficult to forecast what temperature will be in next months.
For example, December 2017 was warm (the average temperature was 4 degrees above zero), cloudy, sometimes rainy and it’s considered to be the darkest month because the sun appeared only for 6 minutes during the whole month.
It is not surprising that people in Moscow don’t smile much
In January weather was mild with average temperature -10, it wasn’t snowing a lot.
And the gorgeous snowstorm ...

Extreme weather conditions are being witnessed in different parts of the world.
Moscow has recently seen a record-breaking amount of snowfall in more than 140 years, while East Africa has been hit by heavy rains.
Jeong Eun-joo reports.
Temperatures in parts of Siberia plummeted to minus 56 degrees Celsius on Monday.
Forecasters in the region said temperatures would feel like more than minus 60 given the wind and humidity and that they could fall further overnight.
Temperatures of minus 50 have become less common in recent years because of climate change, with permafrost showing increasing signs of thawing.

"Black Blizzard" hit Moscow on January 11, 2024. It was a very brief but highly intense snowstorm, with people being buffeted by gusty winds.
One Moscow resident shared a video of the scene outside with comments: "We've got a hurricane going on here! It started sweeping in within a fraction of a second! Suddenly got dark. Haven't seen such a snowstorm in 100 years! Can't see anything!"
Residents of the Moscow region described it as "snowing so hard that it was difficult to breathe."
A "Black Blizzard" refers to weather conditions where snow falls in large flakes, accompanied by strong winds, reducing visibility to just a few meters, according to Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center.
Such phenomena are more typical for the far north of Russia.
According to the Phobos Weather Center, snowdrifts reached over 1.3 feet in some areas, keeping snow removal equipment continuously at work.
In the Moscow region, residents even witnessed a winter thunderstorm. In Balashikha, lightning flashed, thunder rumbled, and snow fell from the sky. Roman Vilfand, the scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, noted that this is an extremely rare occurrence.
The meeting of a cyclone with an anticyclone over Central Russia turned into real weather swings. On January 11, 2024, the air temperature in Moscow initially rose to zero degrees, but by evening, a sharp cold snap arrived, challenging weather-sensitive individuals.
Meteorologists warn that a new Arctic invasion is expected in the central part of the country.
The climate is rapidly changing, and the planet is experiencing more and more such anomalous events. In the coming years, there will be even more anomalies because the planet is entering a dangerous cycle of climate changes.

And the gorgeous snowstorm we saw in February. Everything was covered by snow, people dug their cars, airports were grounded, flights were delayed, and the situation on the roads was difficult, it was best to avoid trips using cars. But nevertheless it was absolutely amazing because I don’t remember so much snow since my childhood. Grey capital turned into the snow Kingdom.
Also in winter Moscow is decorated by thousand of illuminations. It’s great pleasure to spend your time in the center because you may find beautiful streets, nice cafes, parks, squares, ice-rinks and many interesting places to go.
Dress warmer; don’t forget about warm hats, scarves, gloves, couple jumpers, winter coats, waterproof shoes and welcome to Moscow.

In the Russian capital, some of the biggest snowfall ever seen blanketed the city, causing disruption both on the roads and to flights.
According to city officials on Monday, at least 54 flights were delayed and five more were cancelled at Moscow's three largest airports.
Snow depth on Monday exceeded 40 centimeters marking a level unseen in 73 years.
Authorities deployed over 135 thousand people and around 8 thousand pieces of equipment to clear up the snow.
According to the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, Moscow on Sunday posted a record snowfall of 10-point-7 millimeters in twelve hours.
That marks the highest amount of snowfall recorded in the center’s 145 years of weather observation.
Temperatures in Moscow and the region around the capital were forecast to fall to about minus 20 later this week.
Meanwhile, eastern Africa has been hit by unexpected floods.
In Tanzania, heavy rain on Saturday was followed by landslides which have claimed at least 63 lives.
In Kenya, at the end of November, 120 people lost their lives due to the heaviest rainfall in a century, while in Somalia, over 100 people were killed because of adverse weather conditions.
The eastern part of Africa has been grappling with severe drought in recent years, but starting in October, heavy rain and floods, attributed to the El Niño phenomenon, have caused widespread disasters.
